Wireless Security Systems - The True Cost

Wireless Security Systems - The True Cost

Security System

Wireless Vs Hardwire

This is an ever-growing debate within the security alarm industry; both sides have their opinions as I have mine. Since starting KeepSafe Systems, I have never installed a wireless security system. There are several reasons starting from appearance, reliability and sustainability to never having the need to and always finding a way to get a wire where it is needed.

Appearance is a large concern of many homeowners. Although transmitters have gotten smaller over the years, wireless security systems involve the installation of boxy transmitters around your doors and windows. Wireless security system supporters will often tell horror stories of holes drilled throughout your home or wires stapled all over your walls. Yes, I have seen these types of installations, for the most part, they are done by inexperienced or lazy technicians who prefer wireless security systems. Although some wire runs can be difficult and very occasionally require surface runs, there is no excuse for sloppy workmanship. Pick your security alarm installer very carefully; often the small business owner will take more care in ensuring the quality of the installation.

When it comes to the reliability of security systems, hardwire will always be the more reliable of the two. Wireless security alarm supporters of course will say "modern wireless security systems are supervised", basically this is passing over the pitfalls of the technology and adding a feature to tell you when the technology fails. This inevitably runs into expensive and time wasting service calls, equipment replacement and potential false alarms. One need only look at the cordless phone to see the pitfalls of the wireless technology. Sure they are great when you first purchase them, however, age and interference take their toll and sooner or later you have a paperweight with buttons and an LCD screen.

Sustainability is potentially the most expensive reason for choosing hardwire security systems over wireless. I can't even begin to count the changes in wireless security technology and frequencies used since getting into the business back in the late 80's early 90's. Even the wireless security system supporters will tell you that technology is always changing (Except they use the word "advancing"... it sounds better in advertising). So how do wireless security system "advancements" affect the owner of a wireless security system? Easy, say for example you were the unfortunate victim of a wireless security system sales person in 1995. Chances are if one of your motion detectors fails you will be hard-pressed to find a replacement. Simply put, you will now have to purchase an entirely new security system (Control panel, detectors, keypad etc) which depending on the size of your security alarm system will cost you as much and possibly more than if you would have installed a hardwired system to begin with. So in all fairness, I feel I should tell you what is in store for you if a hardwired detector fails. Simple, you replace the detector. Hardwire detectors are simple switches and most hardwire security system detectors are interchangeable regardless of the manufacturer.

Another factor within the realm of sustainability is the cost of upgrading. Back to the system installed in 1995. Yes there have been significant changes in security alarm technology since then. In the hardwire security system world, these changes are mostly in the area of convenience, aesthetics and features. If all your detectors are in working order, upgrading a hardwire security system simply involves changing the control panel and keypad(s). This is generally a fairly easy process and is substantially less expensive than upgrading a complete wireless system.

One last consideration in choosing hardwire security systems over their wireless counterpart is the selection of detectors. Although you can retrofit almost any hardwire detector to a wireless system, there are far more choices of detector types in hardwire. Take for example Carbon monoxide, water, natural gas, propane, vibration... and the list goes on. Wireless security systems are generally designed around the average security need of the consumer. Since detectors are not interchangeable across manufacturer lines, it would be financially unfeasible for a wireless security system manufacturer to create wireless detectors for every conceivable need. Even in the spectrum of standard detectors, there are some manufacturers who have extremely reliable detectors that only work on hardwire systems. Choosing a wireless security system can often result in you having a detector less suited for your particular application. Once again the average security need factor comes into play.

Inevitably, the choice of whether to have a wireless or hardwire security system installed is entirely up to you. In fact, your only choice may be wireless. Hopefully I have given you some information to help you along with your decision. Security Camera System - Buyer's Guide

Security Camera System - Buyer's Guide

Security System

Although the application of CCTV security have not changed very much over the past years, the tools and equipment have significantly. Cameras became smaller, cheaper and better, but the major breakthrough happened in recording equipment.

Therefore many customers shopping for complete CCTV monitoring and recording systems are confused by such a verity of available products. Goal of this article is to guide buyers toward best possible and most economical type of CCTV equipment, based on intended implementation and requirements.

Selecting the right cameras.

It is virtually impossible to describe all types of available ones in this short article. We will focus our attention on most popular and widely used camera types instead.

CCTV security cameras produce images using CMOS or CCD (Charge Couple Device) chips. Tiny, very low price CCTV cameras usually use CMOS technology, produce poor quality images and have very poor light sensitivity. Decent quality CCTV cameras use CCD technology. The size of the CCD chip is normally 1/4", 1/3" or 1/2". As a rule of thumb, the larger the size, the higher the quality of the image produced and the higher the price. However, higher density 1/4" and 1/3" CCD chips can now produce as good an image as many 1/3" or 1/2" chips.

The number of TV lines in the security camera image is a measure of picture resolution (sharpness). The larger the number of TV lines, the better the resolution and hence, overall picture quality. Standard resolution camera may have 350-380 lines, over 400 TV Lines is generally considered good resolution while over 500 TV lines is considered high resolution. B/W chip cameras produce greater resolution and better light sensitivity, therefore suitable for use in dark areas where light conditions are poor most of the time.

On the other hand color cameras offer more realistic and natural picture. CCTV cameras are usually divided into different types based on the body of the camera used.

Professional grade cameras.

Have box type body with the ability to use different types and size of lenses. Exchangeable lenses enable this camera, to monitor objects from virtually any distance. Although for indoor use, they can be used for outdoor when combined with weatherproof housing. They are considered to be the most flexible and widely used by professionals for commercial installations.

Bullet cameras.

Bullet cameras are, as the name suggest contained inside bullet shaped housing.

Most bullet cameras are weatherproof and sealed without the ability to use different lenses. Great advantage of bullet camera is the small size and integrated design, some bullet cameras will even have infrared LED future built-in. Infrared technology is simply LED light in infrared spectrum (not visible to human eye). This light will illuminate viewing area, making possible monitoring in complete darkness. This is great future, but it only works up to certain distance (usually between 10 and 50 ft. depending on model) Vary simple to install and estheticly designed, bullet cameras are great choice for residential and do-it-yourself installations where monitoring objects are within about 25ft from the camera location (with standard 3.6mm lens).

Board Cameras.

Board Cameras are basically fixed lens mounted on a circuit board. These cameras may be packaged in a small case (Mini Cameras) or dome (Mini Dome) or simply sold unpackaged, for mounting by the purchaser. Lenses in these are either of a normal industry aperture or a "pinhole" lens of very small aperture. Pinhole lens cameras are often called "spy" cameras and may be mounted in a concealed way for covert surveillance purposes. The most popular examples of covert board ones are smoke detector and motion detector cameras.

Since the lenses in board cameras are pre-mounted, have a fixed iris and are usually of a short focal length (i.e. wide angle), their flexibility of usefulness is limited. However, this type of camera can provide a low cost solution in the right situation, particularly in a home environment. We have shortly described most popular types of cameras, lets now discus, how and where they mite be used.

Professional types with C/CS mount lens attachment generally offer best performance and many important futures, like lens control output, Back Light Compensation and many more...

Distance from monitoring object to the camera is not an issue, that is why ability to select different lenses, based on location is so important. Installation is bit complicated and professional installation strongly recommended. We recommend this type of security cameras for commercial installations.

Most Bullet cameras in comparison, do not offer high resolution and lens selection flexibility, but are likely to be weatherproof, some will have infrared light built-in and most of all they are relatively easy to implement. They usually come with 3.6mm lens witch are considered to be suitable for most standard installations (good for covering small to medium size room or equivalent).

For larger rooms or longer distances, cameras with 6mm or higher lens may be required. They are great choice for any do-it-yourself installation.

Board cameras in contrast are widely used in covert camera installations, sometimes called Spy Cameras. Many are basically board ones with built-in transmitter. We are not going to go into wireless cameras right now, as this would be enough material for completely new article.

Board cameras are sold as plain circuit board, for integrating into hidden camera devices. They are also available in dome housing, as vary popular Dome Camera or integrated with Smoke Detector, Motion Detector, Exit Sign and so on. Most also come with 3.6mm lens although some will allow lens to be replaced.

Over the time, most practical design has been Dome Camera with its aesthetic appearance it blends into surroundings, especially with drop down sealing, great for use in stores, lobbies, gas stations and other public places. Practical solution for covert installation are also, Motion and Smoke Detector cameras, they are absolutely not substitute for your security alarm or fire protection. They should always be selected based on the location of the camera (inside/outside), distance from the monitoring object, light condition and budget.

When shopping for security cameras, customers are faced with the fact that they will need to select one or another recording device.

The days of well-known CCTV time-lapse VCR recorder are almost over.

Although some customers still prefer this old fashioned recording solution, it is well worth to invest some extra money to purchase a good quality digital video recorder (DVR). Digital recorder transfers analog camera video feed into digital format, and stores it on hard drive. There are two major types of digital recorders on the market right now.

PC Based Systems.

A special board and software installed on the computer will allow camera inputs and store video on the hard drive.

Many people are under the misconception that personal computer with additional hardware installed, will do the job. This explains the hundreds of companies that have hung up a sign, taken out some ads and begun working out of basements and garages, holding themselves out to be DVR manufacturers and security specialists. The main problem with this type of CCTV recorders lies in the main component of it... Yes, it is a computer, designed to do unlimited tasks, but non well. The truth is that any computer based digital video recorder is, and will always be vulnerable to software crashes, hang-ups, system instability, virus related problems etc...

Stand Alone Systems.

Very similar in appearance and control functions to standard VCR recorders, are truly remarkable devices. Most video processing is done by hardware, therefore eliminating system crashes, video is also stored on hard drive in digital format. The basic operating system, usually Linux, is permanently stored on special processor, witch is impossible to overwrite or corrupt. Designed and manufactured with single application in mind, it is by far better in performance and reliability to its PC based rival.

Some DVR systems will even have remote monitoring capability, useful when monitoring is required in different locations through Internet or network. Most important futures to look for when selecting the right DVR recorder are motion detection and frame speed. The higher the frame speed the more fluent video recording. Motion detection will allow recording video from each camera only when motion is detected; this is great for extending video recording time.

Security Monitors.

Video from Security recorder could be displayed on regular TV monitor. It is OK to do it this way, for baby monitoring or residential application, when quality of the picture is not that important. However for professional installation, security monitors are as much important as cameras. They offer extended life of picture tube (necessary with any static picture, that can cause picture burnout) and much grater resolution.

Cables and wiring.

Finally any camera installation will require proper wiring. Good quality cable will prevent video degradation over long distance runs. It is recommended to use RG59 or RG6 coaxial cables as it is fully shielded and will prevent video loss up to 400 ft. Coaxial cables will require BNC connectors and proper installation possibly done by experienced technician. In short runs plug and play non-coaxial cables with factory installed BNC connectors may be used (up to 150 ft.). The plug and play cables are easy enough to install by not experienced users.

Cables for CCTV cameras consist of two cables bundled in one jacket. One cable for video and one for power delivery.

Conclusion.

Every CCTV system is as good and reliable as its weakest component. With this in mind, investing on highest quality and performance cameras, while purchasing low performance recorder, from economical and practical standpoint just does not make sense.

For example, why use CCTV cameras with 500 TV lines of resolution with monitor that offers only 380 or less. All the benefit of high-resolution camera is affectively sacrificed by limited capability of monitor. Asking questions is important before purchasing video security system, and your vendor will probably be able to give more details and recommend equipment for specific needs and requirements.

How to Choose Security Alarm Systems

How to Choose Security Alarm Systems

Security System

Thanks to the rise in crime rates in different areas, it has become increasingly important for people to have some security in their homes. And this protection is not standard as some will use heavy doors, others bolts, others padlocks and the like. The more we advance in science and technology the greater the things we are able to do and achieve. For instance we have security alarm systems which have the ability to detect any movement of an intruder within the perimeter of your home.

If security alarm systems are what you want to use to protect your home then there are factors you need to consider before you do so.

Firstly, you need to know your home as in the number of windows and doors it has and have a rough estimate of which ones you would like to have covered by the system. Choose where you would want your control panel and keypads to be. These are very important components of security alarm systems and they need to be in the most accessible place ever. One suggestion for placing the keypad is next to the main door of your house. This way whenever you enter your home and trigger the alarm, you can quickly reset it. The control panel is the control center of the whole system and this should preferably be in your bedroom where you can monitor things easily. If not, the other ideal option would be to have it in your garage or basement.

The distance between the windows and doors that you want monitored will matter a lot. This is because if the alarm system you choose will be wired, then you will need to determine the distance or the length of wire that will be required to connect the monitors to the control panel. Another reason for you to measure the distance would be because if you choose a wireless system then you will need to know the kind of signal strength you will get and where it will be ideal for you to place the control panel.

You will need to choose whether or not you will need a system that will have 24 hour surveillance or one that will be monitoring at intervals. This also depends on how much you are at home or even the amount of money you are willing to pay. Of course having your home watched for 24 hours is more expensive than having it monitored only at some certain hours.

Hybrid Security Camera DVR Systems Provide for Future Expansion

Hybrid Security Camera DVR Systems Provide for Future Expansion

Security System

People looking to install security cameras in their home or business have many options when selecting a camera system to install. Traditionally, most security cameras have been CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) style cameras which transmit video over an analog coaxial video cable. These cameras generally have a digital image sensor and then convert the video to an analog video signal to transmit over a coaxial RG59 video cable and plug into a Standalone DVR or PC-Based DVR with a BNC style connector. DVRs or PC-Based DVRs would then convert the video from an analog signal to a digital signal once again for storage onto a hard drive. In the last few years, a new style of security camera has become popular for many installations. These newer style IP security cameras have changed the way that many people look at the way security camera systems are planned and installed. IP security cameras contain a digital image sensor similar to the traditional CCTV cameras, however instead of converting the video immediately to an analog signal for transmission to a DVR, these new IP cameras compress the video using their embedded video processing chips and then transmit the cameras over a standard network cable back to a PC with NVR (Network Video Recorder) software. Many home and business owners are confused by conflicting stories about each type of system, making it difficult to choose a system that will work well for their instance.

Each type of system has benefits that should not be overlooked when selecting a system to suit your needs. Traditional CCTV cameras are much less expensive than most of the IP cameras on the market, and are completely interchangeable. Almost every traditional CCTV camera transmits the same format video, so cameras from one system, even an older VCR based system can even be plugged into a newer DVR. Despite many misconceptions, most recent traditional CCTV DVR systems also provide access over the internet, many even from PDA cell phones. When properly planned, these systems can deliver great picture quality and the ability to keep watch of your home or business over the internet with minimal impact to your budget. Newer IP camera NVR systems offer newer technology which can in many cases deliver higher quality video recording (sometimes higher than HDTV resolutions). These IP camera systems can allow home or business owners to achieve great views for the security of their business with fewer cameras in many cases. These cameras require only a single network cable to run to each camera, lowering the difficulty and cost of cabling in many cases however IP camera systems in general are usually not a lower cost, as the cameras are generally more expensive. Many of these systems even support the higher definition megapixel IP cameras, delivering 4-22 times the resolution of a traditional security camera. These NVR systems also usually offer remote viewing capabilities over the internet so that your IP cameras can be viewed from anywhere. Because IP camera NVR systems are still in their infancy in the industry, each camera communicates differently, so the NVR system that is chosen must be programmed to accept each brand, make and model of IP camera, otherwise it would not function with the NVR. These limitations can make it difficult to expand IP camera systems unless the added cameras match the list of supported cameras.

Many home and business owners have been led to believe that they need to purchase an IP camera system in order to view their cameras over the internet, however both types of systems are remotely viewable. Others may want the lower budget traditional systems, but do not want to limit their ability to expand their system in the future to include IP security cameras. That is why many PC-Based DVR systems like our Alnet Systems PC based systems can operate in a Hybrid DVR /NVR arrangement. These systems provide a compromise between budget and future expansion, allowing users to create a system with some traditional CCTV cameras and some IP security cameras. The Hybrid systems usually consist of a PC with a PCI or PCIe DVR card installed to provide inputs for the number of traditional CCTV cameras as well as a license for added IP security cameras. With this type of system, all of the cameras can be viewed on the PC screen and recorded together onto the hard drive. These analog CCTV and IP cameras can then also be viewed remotely together over the internet from a PC, Laptop, BlackBerry, Android PDA phone, iPhone, iPad and many other cell phones as well.

With hybrid capable security camera DVR systems like our Alnet Systems DVR cards, home and business owners can start out with analog security cameras alone, and simply add license later for added IP cameras or additional cards for more traditional CCTV cameras. The ability to expand the system slowly and use both newer and older technology together make hybrid systems a great choice to help meet budgetary requirements and still deliver desired features and picture quality. When building your next security camera system, consider finding a system that will allow both lower budget and higher definition IP cameras together.

How Safe Are You on a Bus Without Video Security and Backup Systems?

How Safe Are You on a Bus Without Video Security and Backup Systems?

Security System

The Nastiest Pick-Ups

The gruesome crime committed on board a passenger bus serves as a warning to all. The hideous beheading in the bus is an indication that video security cameras inside the vehicle could have alerted the bus driver and the other passengers that someone was fighting for his life.

Still this would not have prevented the crime because as killings go, these happen faster than the blink of an eye. But if the bus had alert security people onboard to beef up video security, the young man could have been saved. The unfortunate incident reveals the gaps in public transport safety.

Buses pick up fares at bus stops and anybody with a deadly weapon can get in without detection. There are no strict watches at the bus stops and metal detectors are not available to alert the bus driver to restricted items. Anybody can get on the bus - drunks, thugs, blood-thirsty maniacs and other lowlifes - and sit next to you!

How Safe are You on the Bus?

Airlines are strict about air safety to the point of paranoia; land public transport should be as vigilant because terrorists are not the only public threat; psychos and other oddballs are a growing menace and they can get on buses and trains anytime and anywhere.

These crimes can happen on public transport:

* Bombs left to detonate
* Unwanted sexual advances
* Robberies
* Harassment
* Lynching

Anybody can be victimized while other passengers can only watch in fear and frustration. With no alarms or alerts, passengers are left to fend for themselves if criminal elements pounce on them. The presence of video security camera systems will only record the scene but if this is backed up with an automated alarm system and if there are competent security officers strategically positioned in the public ride, criminals will back off.

How to Stay Safe in Public Buses without Video Security Cameras

If you or members of your family frequently take bus or train rides, take steps to protect yourselves. These tips should help you and your family while on the road:

What you should do:

* Stay cool when your cell phone rings; becoming flustered just distracts your attention.
* Bring an umbrella; this can be used as weapon. Petty thieves and rapists avoid women with umbrellas.
* Stay alert during the trip if you are traveling alone. Pickpockets prey on sleeping passengers.
* Avoid looking at your bag; this gives thieves the idea that there is substantial money in there.
* Separate coins and cash for expenses while on the road. There won't be needless unfastening of your purse or bag.
* If traveling with a group do not wander off without company and inform others if a visit to a washroom is urgent.
* Young girls should avoid wearing skimpy clothes that would invite malicious stares
* Girls should sit where there are more women.

At the rate things are going, the public transport sector is gearing up to protect their passengers by installing video security cameras in buses and taxis. But how about ensuring that metal detectors and guards are posted at every bus stop to prevent knives, bombs and guns from getting on the bus too?

Advantages & Disadvantages of Wireless Home Security Alarm Systems

Advantages & Disadvantages of Wireless Home Security Alarm Systems

Security System

If you are the sort of person who takes their home security seriously, then you may be interested in finding out more on wireless home security alarm systems. These nifty little devices aim to provide you with added security for your home and have the ability to be controlled from a central location in your house.

We will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of these devices as well as discuss what the future may bring for these alarms. To begin with the main advantage to these home alarm is quite an obvious one, they are wireless! Yes, this is obvious but it needs to be pointed out never the less as it completely removes the extreme hassle that was caused when installing a hard wired alarm.

Long gone are the days of having to furiously tuck away your cables, with the advent of wireless home security alarm systems you no longer need to be concerned with any potential eyesores appearing in your home.

As well as being unobtrusive, these wireless alarm systems can actually be controlled from one central location. An example of this is that be that an individual has set up their alarms on their garage, and the windows upstairs. They can now control both of these alarms with a central control panel that comes with these devices.

Disadvantages for these types of products are that they come at a slightly higher price than your usual hard wire alarm. This is of course down to it still being s developing technology but with time it is predicted that these prices will come down to match their hard wired counterparts.

On top of that, another negative aspect of wireless security is that there is always a small chance that they can be remotely hacked and the hijacker can find the security code embedded within the key fob. Not ideal but it can happen so it is always best to be aware of this small possibility.

To wrap up, there is no denying the advantages of these alarms. They are easy to setup and have great usability with the fact they come with a centralised control panel. It is however always important to understand that they may have slight security issues and unfortunately still come in a slightly steeper price than a standard house alarm.

The future of these devices will see them becoming more and more widespread with each new home owner. Add to that the fact that they are also becoming more affordable, we can only predict a bright future for the wireless home security alarm.

Fake Security Cameras - Cheap But Effective Home Security

Fake Security Cameras - Cheap But Effective Home Security

Security System

Safety and protection is now the top priority of those who are conscious about the growing crime rate brought about by increased poverty and crisis. To those with money, it is not a problem to protect their families and properties since they can afford all the security and safety money can buy. However, for those who are always on a budget and are struggling to make ends meet, purchasing the innovative security devices are simply out of the question. Bolts may be affordable but highly technological devices such as alarm systems and security cameras are simply too costly.

There are those who say that there is no need to worry since only those with money will be the target of burglars. However, criminals are not limited to burglars only. There are in fact only a small percentage of the types of criminals existing in the country. There are a lot of serial killers who will not need any reason to kill. Simply put, protection is a commodity needed by just about anybody.

It's a good thing there is a solution to this problem. If you want to get the effectiveness that is almost the same as those security devices only the wealthy can buy but at a cheap price, then all you need is to have your home installed with several fake security cameras. The price is far from the real ones. The effectiveness however, is almost the same.

By placing these fake security cameras in the areas of your home that will easily be seen by thieves and intruders, you can be assured that they will not put even a foot in your property. To make sure that seasoned burglars will not recognize dummy cameras, be sure to equip them with cables and connections that are also found in real cameras. Also, put them in areas where you are giving the illusion that you are trying to hide the cameras and that the burglar is intelligent enough to have found it. As any other fake objects however, this one will not be able to give your home true security. They are an effective deterrent but of course, no shots or videos will be taken.

Home Security System Consumer Reports

Home Security System Consumer Reports

Security System

It goes without saying that before choosing a home security system that fits your requirements and budget your own thorough research must be made. This research should involve reading as more as possible information, both in online and offline sources.

The majority of people always pay a particular attention to consumer reports and this is a wise decision to make as in this way it is possible to discover good and bad facts about the product you are going to pay money for. That is the reason why while looking for home security system it is important to consider home security system consumer reports. And in this article you will find out the key points of such reports.

First of all, you need to check whether the product gets high marks systematically. Seek the information that concerns false alarms because usually they identify home security system that is not worth to be obtained.

The next thing you should draw attention to while looking through the consumer reports is the customer service policy. Read how the company reacts to the complaints sent by its customers.

If you are choosing between wireless and hard wired home security systems, then pay attention to the reviews left by customers concerning this technological solution. Are they satisfied with such innovation?

You should also estimate the duration of the product you are interested in.

In addition, these consumer reports involve information about:
- user-friendliness

First of all, about arms control. Who needs a new arms race? I want to point out that the USA has not developed a new strategic weapon in more than two decades and that you recently tested the Topol-M missile, and that it is already deployed in silos and on mobile installations. You criticised the USA for unilateral actions and said twice that military actions can only be legitimate if they receive UN approval. The USA is carrying out military actions in Iraq and in Afghanistan according to UN decisions and today in Kosovo the majority of troops are supporting peace-making operations in this country. My question is the following: are you saying that independently of how Russia perceives a threat to its international interests, it will not undertake military operations without UN approval? QUESTION: You talked about the danger of a unipolar world in which one sovereign makes a decision without consulting anyone else. In many peoples opinion, in Russia we are seeing an increasingly unipolar government where competing centres of influence are forced to tow the party line, whether it be in the State Duma, the regional leadership, the media, business communities or ...

Security Systems Protect the Home and Now a Wireless System Allows you to Protect Your Autos

Security Systems Protect the Home and Now a Wireless System Allows you to Protect Your Autos

Security System

Protecting a home is often the first thought after moving in and make the decision to install an alarm system and what gets forgotten is the garage. But what about the unattached garage, can that be protected too and how can this be done?

Today most vehicles have alarm systems and we take it for granted when one goes off that it is just a mistake and one that gets on our nerves if it is a nice quite day and a horn starts blaring.

This is one main reason why it makes sense to use an alarm system in the garage, autos are expensive investments and many people also have motorhomes, motorcycles, and classic cars. It has become an easy task to ensure that these vehicles stay safe from thieves and home security companies have made it all possible with their wireless system sensors on the windows of the garage, sensors on the doors and a telephone line, your cars and other vehicles no matter how expensive will be protected. They can not only be protected from thieves but also from smoke and fire, as well as water leaks and flooding and many unattached garages have sinks and even laundry facilities in them and should these water pipes spring a leak it may go unnoticed for hours or even days until the leak becomes a real problem.

These sensor work when set by alerting the monitoring system control panel if one of the windows or doors that they are attached to is opened, of course if it is a family member there is a small amount of time allotted to key in the security code to disarm the alarm system. If this is not done then the control panel will alert the monitoring center that there has been a break-in at the home and the authorities will be set out to check on the property.

This can all be done without installing wiring and can give the garage all the protection it needs and added with the home security system, motion lighting and even cameras can give the entire property protection from thieves and auto thefts are on the rise in every area even the areas that are said to be the safest to live.

Its easy to be safe in the home and in the garage with a wired or wireless system.

Best Practices of CCTV - Implementing Successful Video Security Systems

Best Practices of CCTV - Implementing Successful Video Security Systems

Security System

This CCTV Buyers Guide provides a comprehensive overview of deploying a successful video surveillance camera system in your business or residence. This guide contains information to help in the design of your video surveillance system, select the products that best fit your CCTV system requirements, and help make key installation decisions that will save you time and money. The information was derived from deploying 100's of CCTV systems and gathered from CCTV call centers who answer questions from commercial and residential customers. This guide combines the data from past CTV projects and gives the reader a head-start in the successful CCTV project

There are many details to consider when specifying the correct CCTV Camera System. Professional Video Surveillance is not a cheap endeavor and a budget should be outlined and the best possible system should be considered. This guide will help the novice CCTV buyer in reviewing camera and recording system for their CCTV and Video surveillance requirements.

The first task in a successful CCTV project is to outline the key CCTV objectives.

o How many cameras are required?

o What are the key FoV (Field of View(s))?

o What are the recording requirements?

o What are the lighting conditions of each camera location?

o Where do I need live video monitoring or a second video monitor?

o How long do you need to retain the video files?

Cameras There are specific cameras that need to be selected based on the FoV, lighting conditions, and the mounting location of the camera. There is no such thing as a one-size fits all in the successful CCTV project. It is important to note each camera location and select the camera best suited for that location.

Answer these questions:

o Indoor or Outdoor?

o Lighting conditions (during day and night)?

o Mounting locations?

Indoor Dome Camera

The indoor dome camera is used in 90% of general indoor applications. It comes in a variety of configurations including standard color, Day/Night, and Infrared versions. It can be mounted on a horizontal or vertical surface but is typically ceiling mounted. Lens options on dome camera may restrict their use in certain applications such as requiring more than a 20mm video lens. Dome cameras are a primary choice in indoor camera locations.

Box Camera

A box camera is a standard camera that can be mounted alone or in an enclosure. The box camera uses a separate lens that screws on to the front surface and provides flexibility for different FoV requirements and is sold without a lens. An auto-iris lens will have a small cable that connects to the camera for iris control in various lighting conditions.

Outdoor Dome Cameras

Outdoor Dome Cameras are typically hard shell vandal-roof casings that offer the same versatility in a variety of lens options. Day/Night outdoor dome cameras are common in applications that have entry and exit points with limited lighting during the night.

Day/Night Camera

The Day/Night camera is the best choice for low-light conditions. The cameras are standard color during daylight conditions, the Day/Night camera switches either digitally of mechanically to a low-lux B/W mode.

Infrared Camera

During No-Light conditions, Infrared cameras provide infrared illumination of the FoF allowing monitoring of areas with no light available. Te IR LEDs are automatically illuminated and the camera switched to the B/W low-lux mode offering camera views in total darkness.

PTZ Camera

Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera offer the ability to view in all directions and optically zoom in as required. PTZ cameras also include standard color, Day/Night modes, and a few IR PTZ cameras have been introduced recently. The CCTV operator can set the PTZ cameras to automatically rotate to different FoVs. Options include Auto-tracking applications that dynamically track objects in defined areas.

About the Camera technology

Sony CCDs are the predominate video element in security cameras today. Sony makes few cameras, but they own the CCD market. Do not think that Sony makes the camera touted as " Sony 1/3" Super HAD Camera" as many vendors advertise their cameras. The camera has a Sony CCD, however the camera is not from Sony and could be almost any brand camera out there. Important factors of lens quality, vari-focal and auto-iris ability, quality of camera housing or enclosure, and lens optics are the difference in a professional CCTV camera.

Facts about Cameras:

o If you buy an camera, you will get an view.

o 480 TVL should be a minimum requirement in any professional CCTV project.

o Location of the camera and the correct lens are keys to quality video capture

o Cameras love light and thieves hate the light! Add lighting wherever possible

Camera Enclosure

Box cameras can be mounted in a variety of enclosures. Outdoor enclosures in cold climates should include a heater/blower that keeps frost and condensation from forming on the lens and camera. Heater/Blower are commonly 24VAC and should be considered when selecting the CCTV power supply system.

Camera Location

Camera mounting location is critical to the success of the CCTV project. Cameras should be mounted as close possible to the field of view required, and the closer the camera to the subject the better the identification of the subject will be. Proper lens selection relative to the camera location and the FoV required is essential to a quality picture.

Digital Video Recorders

DVRs are an important part of any successful CCTV project. Video resolution is getting larger, recording speeds are getting faster, and video data compression is reducing the video data file size. TeraByte storage capacity is becoming common in many CCTV applications. Network or remote monitoring of CCTV video is standard in all professional DVRs on the market in 2007 and video distribution across LANs, WANs, and the Web have given the DVR a new market outside of video security known as Business Systems Monitoring that allows management to monitor specified key business areas 24 hours a day. No longer just a security video recorder, the DVR has become a business tool for management with remote monitoring applications.

In order to choose the correct DVR for any application, the following questions need to be answered.

o How many channels (cameras)?

o What speed of recording is required?

o How long to retain video files (Hard Drive Size)?

o What features are important to the application?

o Where will DVR system be located?

o Remote monitoring requirements?

In choosing the right DVR for your CCTV application, ensure that you are determining the quantity of cameras needed now and in the next 24 months. DVRs come in 4, 8, 9, and 16 channel increments and this selection is critical because adding cameras above the DVR channels available will require an additional DVR, not just additional channels. DVR systems in large installations are segmented into 16 channels units and are monitored and managed through a Central Management System.

The speed of recording is critical to many CCTV applications. 30 fps (frames per second) is considered real-time video, therefore to obtain 30 fps for the application, 480 fps for 16 channels and 240fps for 8 channels is required. Many CCTV applications will provide real-time (30 fps) live viewing of video channels and 7-15 fps for recorded files. It is acceptable to have 7-15 fps for recorded files in many applications, but technology in DVR systems has pushed real-time video for the masses and 30 fps recording will soon be the standard recording rates across all channels as available today.

Storage of vide files is much easier and cost effective in 2007 than ever before. DVR storage at the TeraByte level is common and drives have become faster and more reliable. Retention of video data files can be managed by corporate IT departments as any business critical data and network drive archiving is common. All of the top DVR systems have USB ports for external storage devices and LAN-based video servers are common. A critical component of any DVR system is the ability to access the video files. The software provided by DVR manufacturers is proprietary to the DVR unit and the ability to retrieve files chronologically or based on certain security events is vital to the DVR product.

PC-Based vs. Standalone DVRs

Standalone DVR systems were the majority of video recorders sold in the marketplace up until 2006. Computer-based DVRs have become increasingly popular due to the cost and features provide in the latest generation of DVR cards on the market in 2007. The Windows XP PC computer is providing the reliability and performance in today's DVR systems that are required for mission critical video security systems. The open architecture of PC-based DVR systems allow easy integration into corporate LANs and technology upgrades are at a component level. Software upgrades and hard drive storage additions are far less costly that proprietary DVR systems. Standalone DVRs are imbedded recording systems usually operating under Linux OS. The standalone DVRs are widely used in retail security sites and provide reliable video recording for 4-16 channels. Most DVRs on the market offer network remote access and CD R/W archiving.Computer-based DVR systems are reliable, fast, and have many advanced applications not found on standalone systems.

Video compression

MPEG4 and H.264 are the video compression of choice in 2007. In summary, MPEG4 is good and H.264 is better. The key to video compression is the resolution and the size of the video. High resolution video files are monster size files and video compression for storage and streaming is critical to any video application. Major advancements in video compression will be seen in 2007 and H.264 will be the codec of choice for DVR manufacturers.

H.264

This uses the latest innovations in video compression technology to provide high resolution video quality from the smallest amount of video data required. Smaller files will save bandwidth and storage costs over previous generations of video codecs. H.264 delivers the same quality as MPEG-2 at a third to half the data rate and up to four times the frame size of MPEG-4 Part 2 at the same data rate. H.264 is used in the latest video devices for High Definition video devices, BluRay DVDs and should be considered for any professional CCTV project.

Network Access and Remote Viewing

Network access is the ability to remotely monitor a video server across the LAN, WAN, or internet. A very important application for any DVR system is the ability to monitor live and access to recordings through remote access. Most DVRs today have a LAN RJ45 connection that allows the Video Recorder to connect to the LAN just like any other PC in the office.

Advanced DVR Features

Many CCTV systems are releasing advanced security and specialty software for security enhancements. These include:

o Object counting

o POS Integration

o PTZ Auto-Tracking

o Face Recognition

o Access Control Integration

CCTV Cabling and System Layout

DVR Location In choosing the optimal location for the DVR system, consider the access of the area for centralized control and security of the area. The DVR is the heart of the CCTV system and should be protected as necessary to ensure it is safe from theft or damage. If the security breach includes theft of the DVR component, all evidence is carried off under the arm of the thief. And the thieves know this, so ensure that the DVR system is in a lock-box or an appropriate secure area.

Camera Power Supply

Each professional camera requires either 12VDC or 24VAC. Both power options are acceptable and some CCTV installations will require both. Central Power Supplies are available in 4,8,16 and more channels.

Cable Options

Traditional video cable is RG59 coax cable. Siamese dual cable is commonly used that provides RG59u coax together with a pair of 18 gauge wire for the camera power requirements. The dual cable allows single cable runs to each camera for both video and power.

Cat-5 Options

UTP (twisted pair) cabling is becoming more popular with Cat-5e/Cat-6 cabling used in networks. CAT cabling is lighter and less expensive than coax cabling and requires balun connectors to match the impedance of the video signal. Coax and UTP connections up to1000' feet are acceptable. A balun is used to match the impedance on Cat-5 connections on the DVR and camera connections.

Advancement of Computerized Security Camera Systems

Advancement of Computerized Security Camera Systems

Security System

Law enforcement has been trying to find ways to apprehend criminals. Since policemen cannot be in all places at all the time, the arm of the law has been continually developing ways to monitor, observe, and record what goes on in their area of responsibility, hoping to catch a criminal in the act. This activity is called surveillance.

The rapid advancement of technology has given law enforcement the necessary tools in monitoring crime. These tools are efficient and have helped the police catch criminals. In fact, the presence or knowledge that that certain surveillance system is somewhere in the area makes criminals think twice before doing their despicable acts of lawlessness.

One of the most effective surveillance tools in use today is the CCTV camera. These cameras are placed outdoors, just out of sight from the public. They are the "extended eyes" of the law enforcements.

The first CCTV cameras used for monitoring public places were simple, obvious, and low definition. They show images only in black-and-white, and they don't have features such as zooming or panning.

Today's security camera systems, however, are small and inconspicuous. Despite their size, they can produce surprisingly high-definition color images. Not only that, they can also zoom and focus on minute details, such as, a vehicle's plate number, a person's face, an identifying mark, or, in the right circumstances, even a hidden weapon. Furthermore, when linked to a computer network, the camera can track objects and people. That means they can hone in on a movement across the vicinity where there is normally no movement. These high-tech devices can even focus on a suspicious person or object and follow him or it through a busy crowd. This makes it very hard for a criminal to escape. Because CCTVs can focus on a person's face, it is possible to verify his identity without the person himself knowing it.

Let's say a pickpocket grabbed a woman's purse and thought he got away. What he didn't know was that a CCTV was monitoring him, and the operator decided to focus on his face. The image was then run to a computer database where it was matched with thousands of pictures. In a few hours, the police may have a positive match, and if they do, it's off to jail for the pickpocket.

Of course, security camera systems sometimes fail in identification, but the technology is improving. In a few years, the identification system will be vastly improved.

Computerized CCTV monitoring technology is being developed and improved. With such an advanced system, an operator can observe more cameras without endlessly looking at the screen. Furthermore, the computer can be programmed to recognize particular body movements and facial expressions. Since criminals have rather unusual movements and expressions-nervousness before doing a crime, for example-they act subtly different from normal people in public. The system will be able to spot this and alert the operator, telling him or the police organization a possible indication or occurrence of a crime.
